2nd Annual Interstate Hickory Touranment
November 19, 2009
2nd ANNUAL
INTERSTATE HICKORY TOURNAMENT
6th & 7th November 2009
OLD KINDERHOOK GOLF CLUB, MISSOURI
Teams representing Alabama; Illinois; Iowa (2); Missouri (2); Nebraska and Wisconsin competed in the Mens Section and 2 Teams from Missouri and Nebraska in the Ladies Section. Both days were sunny and in the 70’s, so could not have been more conducive to golf.
The Mens Event was played in a Two Ball Better Ball and Foursomes format, applying the English Stableford scoring method (1 pt bogey; 2 pt par; 3 pt birdie; 4 pt eagle). Handicaps applied to the Better Ball, and the Foursomes were played scratch.
In the Friday Two Ball format, the Missouri Team of Jim Beatson and Chuck Howington scored 43 points, and Jim set a new hickory Course record of 76 gross, never having played a full round of hickories before.
(Randy et al take note!) On Saturday they ran up 28 points, and emerged clear winners. The full results were
(1) Jim Beatson/Chuck Howington (Missouri), 43 + 28, Total 71 pts
(2) Duane Baylor/Dick Shanahan (Nebraska), 42 + 18, Total 60 pts
(3) Brad Baird/Bryant Murphy (Illinois), 41 + 16, Total 57 pts
(4) Doug Floyd/Charlie Bare (Alabama), 36 + 14, Total 50 pts
(5) Bill Reed/John Ausen (Iowa), 32 + 13, Total 45 pts
(6) Peter Herrington/Fred Smeltzer (Missouri), 37 + 8, Total 45 pts
(7) Clayton Copple/Russ Fisher (Iowa), 38 + 5, Total 43 pts
(8) Gregg Smith/Don Madelung (Wisconsin), 26 + 13, Total 39 pts
The Ladies played a scramble format both days, and the NebraskaTeam of Chris Shanahan/Hilde Bare won by the slender margin of One-Up against the Missouri Team of Sherry Smeltzer/Debbie Herrington
The four Winners each received prizes crafted out of hickory by Russ Fisher and the Hickory Cup acquired a splendid plinth also crafted by Russ from hickory, and all were donated by the Hickory Golf Association. Sherry Smeltzer also provided embroidered towels for the Winners.
As always at Kinderhook, we take the social side as seriously as the golf, with the highlight being the open house given by Fred and Sherry Smeltzer on Thursday evening, when more than 100 single malts were available for tasting, as well as Sherry’s delicious gumbo and finger food. The three non-playing Spouses claimed to have had the best fun, visiting our Antique and Shopping Malls!
Everyone stayed on the Property for the duration, and dinner was provided on the Friday and Saturday evenings, to ensure the Group stayed together and enjoyed old and new friends. Bryant brought over 400 hickory clubs for sale at bargain prices, and we are pleased to report that several were bought by Golfers who were not part of the Event, but announced their intention to become hickory Players.
Happily, hickory golf is expanding, and the calendar is becoming more congested each year. In an attempt to avoid the National Event next year, we will probably move to mid November, so watch the HGA website for details, and plan to bring a State Team next year to unseat the “Show-Me” State!
