Long time GCS member Harry Mack Horton (GCS member # 213) of Middleton, Wisconsin was the quest of honor at the Iowa Hickory Classic Golf Tournament held at Hyperion Field Club near Des Moines, Iowa this past September, 2009.

This tournament, which historically fields an average of 50 players or more, has an Open Division, a Ladies Division, a Scramble Division and a Senior Division for the hickory players over the age of 60. The tournament committee voted the permanent traveling trophy awarded to the Senior Division Winner be named in honor of this long time friend of Hickory Golf. Now 85 years of age, Harry has devoted many years to the world of hickory golf. His business card reads: “ Past Perfect’ and that is what he is all about. His knowledge of the game only ranks second to his unselfish sharing of the same. The winner of the 2009 Harry Mack Horton Senior Division Trophy was Jim Carrothers of the host facility, Hyperion Field Club after shooting the overall low score of the tournament with a 79 over 6085 yards, which reflected the original tournament tees of this 1910 Thomas Bendelow design. John Hutton of Lakewood, Co. was 2^nd with an 83 and club member John Bachman was 3^rd with an 85.

The Senior net winner was Don Kavalec of Omaha (70), 2^nd place went to Brad Baird of Chicago (75) and 3^rd place to Mike Enich of Pengilly, Mn. (75) in a card off.

The Open Division Trophy was hoisted by Dave McNair of Omaha, who crafted an 80 in a tight battle with the 2007 winner Randy Jensen (81) and the 2008 winner Dr. David Brown (82). Both Jensen and Brown are also from Omaha.

The Open net division winner was Bill Dickens, the Executive Director of the Iowa Golf Association (72).  Dick Shanahan of Shelby Ne. was 2^nd  (74) and 3^rd was won by Bryan Doughman of Omaha, Ne. (74) in a card off.

The Ladies Division Championship was successfully defended by the 2008 winner Barb Bachman of Hyperion Field Club with a score of 90. Cindy Austin of Omaha was 2^nd and 2007 Champion Chris Shanahan of Shelby, Ne. placed 3^rd this year.

The Scramble honors went to the HGA's Clayton Copple of Des Moines, Gregg Dress of Omaha and CanadianGCS member Dave Jardine of Alberta, Canada. ( 69)

This extremely popular tournament was hosted for the third year by the Hickory Golf Association and was attended by 50 players this year. Local members of both the Golf Collectors Society and the Society of Hickory Golfers joined with the HGA to insure the success of this popular annual tournament, trade show, and the Friday evening reception featuring Scottish delicacies by Hyperion’s Chef Bill Valentino.
